I grew up on a farm, and ate fresh vegetables and fruits out of the garden during gardening season. We canned or froze the rest so that we could continue to enjoy them in the winter. Cherries: Tart cherries are an important part of getting over an attack of gout. This is true in two ways. One, they help rid your body of uric acid, which is what is causing the pain. Second, they have a mild anti-inflammatory effect, which could help relieve swelling and pain.

Fiber: Most fruits and vegetables come with fiber, an indigestible product that helps block cholesterol absorption and pushes unwanted fat and cholesterol through the intestines without being absorbed by the body. Fiber also helps you stay regular.

Fluid: Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of fluids, which go toward maintaining adequate hydration. Citrus fruits are especially full of fluids.
