Why do men play sports recreation games? And why do their wives encourage them to? Being the wife of your typical sports-crazed man, I have investigated the phenomena of fantasy baseball leagues, football leagues, and other game-playing groups. And here is what I found.
Playing table-top and computer games that recreate real-life seasons using statistics, enables the average man to become Vince Lombardi, Casey Stengel, or Red Auerbach. He can manage the world championship team, trade players, and enjoy visualizing the play of the game.
Baseball and football table-top leagues can be played over the internet. My husband has hosted the business meeting to set up the league rules, the “draft,” and the World Series. I have witnessed men getting ready for head-to-head play, talking to the team in the locker room, deciding when to pull the pitcher, or when to hit-and-run.
Because the games are based on true statistics from a previous season or real-life event, this hobby can recreate the situation where the decision to go for the touchdown may have been the smarter move rather than settling for the field goal.
As the crowd has gotten older and taken up other sports, such as golf, PC golf and table-top golf games have been added to the mix allowing the player to imagine the sweeping vistas of Pebble Beach, and the treacherous links course of St. Andrews. If you want to recommend a hobby, playing sports-recreation games is an excellent choice. It channels all the sports interest into a fun and social pastime, encourages mental exercise, stimulates the imagination, and best of all, keeps him home.
