Many retailers were disappointed this holiday shopping season because their revenues were lower than they expected, even when they initiated the holiday shopping season earlier than usual and offered great discounts to shoppers. It is difficult to pin point the reason why many shoppers refused to unzip their wallets. Though US economy is said to be improving, many are still out of work and Congress’ failure to resolve the issues that could lead to “fiscal cliff” kept everyone in the dark as to what direction the economy might be heading after the Bush Tax cut expires on January 1st 2013.

Some retailers on the other hand are re-evaluating themselves to see how they have to survive going forward. One of the steps these retailers are taking is to gradually wean their customers off “sales” and coupons. Whatever direction the economy heads after the expiration of Bush Tax cuts on 1st January 2013, “sales” or no “sales”, coupons or no coupon, people will still have to be clothed. Clothing is one of the basic needs of life, so people will still have to buy clothing for themselves and for their family. The question then is; How do you determine the clothing you have to buy?

There are a lot of factors that determine peoples’ clothing needs. Some parents will be looking to buy infants’ clothing for their infants, some others may be looking to buy kids’ clothing for their older kids while others may be looking to buy clothing for themselves. Shopping for infants’ and kids’ clothing can be very challenging and expensive. Kids out grow their clothing very quickly, as such parents are constantly replacing their kids’ clothing. It may not be expensive to have a functional and a robust wardrobe, as one doesn’t necessarily need to have a wardrobe filled with clothing. Few high quality and diverse clothing types is enough to make a functional and robust wardrobe. For example a man’s functional and robust wardrobe, depending on his profession and social/ religious circles, might consist of couple of t-shirts, polo, shirts, men’s pants, dress shirts with matching ties and cufflinks.
